The training season is already two months old, and I'm still not bored by running in Vienna. Before moving to Vienna, I was not sure about that, but now I can say, that also Vienna offers good training possibilities. Currently, I'm focusing more on my running skills than on orienteering-technique, but with the team camp in Portugal in February, I'll have an o-technique block, before I'll head to Kenya in March.

After the New Year's Eve run in Vienna, I'll attent a regional cross-country run...

	2011 is over.

I used the last day of the year to participate in the "Silvesterlauf" in Vienna, a 5,325km street-race along Vienna's most beautiful road the "Ringstraße". Anyway, during the race I didn't have time to care about churches, castles, opera, etc.

The conditions were good, nice temperature, sunny, some wind. My beginning was too slow, the first km only in 3:20, but it was difficult to get the right pace as it was very crowded. Afterwards, I could increase the pace, finishing in...

Yesterday, the Military Sport Awards were distributed in the nice surroundings of the Vienna Military History Museum. Together with Benjamin Karl (Snowboarding) and Kilian Fischhuber (Climbing), I was nominated in the category "Sportsman of the Year". The minister of sports and defense lifted the secret and I was pleased to be awarded the price :)

Furthermore, Markus Kössler and Richard Schuh, who were my longtime coaches during my youth time and the 10 years I spent in the Austrian...

With the end of November, I left the Austrian Military Orienteering Team after ten years. I want to say thank you to my team mates, coaches and sportsmen from the other disciplines who contributed to a varying daily life. Looking back, time past by fast and there were many up and downs during that period with the height of my career during my last year within the Military Team. But there were also times that weren’t that nice, e.g. being injured, being totally out of shape, etc. However, I...

The relay „Smalandskavlen“ concluded my orienteering season 2011. It was the first time I participated in this 5 men relay. Two individual night races, then a chasing start for the three remaining runners per team. I liked this type of relay, as you don’t have to run when you’re usually are sleeping ;)
I got the last leg to run. My Pan-Kristianstad team mates, Jakob, Harri, Andreas and Rasmus did an excellent work and sent me out on the fifth place. Except of the two leading teams, the...

Last Friday, I participated in the Vienna Twin Tower Stair race - 680 stairs, 34 floors, approx. 130m climbing. It was my first race of this type and before the start, I didn't know how to start into such a competition and how long it might take one to get up the tower. After some runners, it turned out that the race will last for about 3 minutes. I decided for the following strategy: start fast, take two stairs at once and keep the speed high as long as possible. Sounds easy...
Afterwards, I...

With two races last weekend, including the night championship, the Austria Cup 2011 is completed. Getting out of the dark as fast as possible, or at least faster as the others, was the goal on Saturday. It took me 69 minutes to finish the 7,9km course, 450 climbing, with 39 controls. As most other runners had bigger mistakes, I could gain a clear victory, ahead of my former room mate Pierre.
On Sunday, the last Austriacup, this time a prolongued middle, was on schedule. The forest was the same,...

25manna, a really nice club event. With my team, OK Pan Kristianstad, I enjoyed the event for my very first time last weekend. I found myself on the second leg, a 7,2km forest high speed "sprint" - at least it felt like a long sprint. As the terrain and the coruse were rather easy, the gaps between the teams were little, especially on the first legs. However, it was fun to run in a never ending bulk of runners. In the end, our team took the 43rd place.

11th place in the overall Worldcup - wow - I didn't expect that before the season, especially when you have never been in the Top30 earlier. Last weekend at the World Cup Final in Switzerland, I was very happy with my performance on the middle distance. I had a solid race from the start, got a good map contact from the beginning and also the physical shape was good. Controls 10 - 11 were somehow difficult in the control area, as it was not easy to assign the vegetation drwan on the map to the...

After the CISM victory in Brasil, I added another fantastic success to my orienteering career. The first time in my life, I finished a World Cup race on the podium. Was a ninth place so far my best World Cup position (twice at WOC), I ended on the third place on the middle distance in Liberec.
I didn’t have the best start into the race one can dream off, as I lost some seconds already on the way to the first control – wrong stone. But afterwards, nearly everything went fine, as I took enough...
